Look Hot, Be Cool

With the summer sun burning down on us, it's hard to look hot without literally looking hot (i.e melted popsicle). This fashion blogger can easily sit in the sun all day but putting together an outfit that doesn't consist of a bikini top and bottom which will keep me from suffering heat stroke requires some work. There are, however, some essential pieces I am gravitating toward and here is why.

J. Crew Panama Hat: For me, a sun hat is a summer staple I look forward to wearing each year. For fashion girls with dark hair especially, a hat is a life saver when it comes to the summer sun.
Madewell Tank Romper: At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the romper. Then I bought one. Now I am hooked. With all the practicality of a summer dress, you throw this bad boy on paired with a couple of light accessories and you're golden.
DKNY Shirt Dress: Easy to wear and can be taken from shopping day trip to dinner out on a patio with just a quick change of flats to heels.
Alexander Wang Zipper Motif Sunglasses: As I have mentioned, here, I have an obsession with sunglasses. But I mean really, they are an essential every fashion girl needs not just in the summer but year round. 
Cole Haan Halsley Thong Sandal: With heat comes inevitable swelling of feet (ugh). As such when I am running around town, I like to wear the most minimal flats to avoid any unwanted blisters. 
Cora Thomas Necklace & Ring: While I am all for a chunky statement necklace, seen here, when it is 40°C outside I want very few things touching (or sticking) to my skin. Dainty jewelry can still have the impact of an elaborate statement necklace; just look for unique pendants and try layering a couple of pieces for similar visual interest as that of a bulky necklace.
Madewell Boarwalk Shorts: These silk shorts are perfect for summer. Lightweight and easy to dress up or down, if they came in a magnitude of colours I would buy my size in each.
Cole Haan Ali Crossbody: When the sun is beaming down on me, the last thing I really want to do is carry around my 10lb handbag. A small crossbody bag helps to prioritize what I need with me when I leave the house and keeps my hands free for while I am picking flowers at the Farmers Market.

All But The Kitchen Sink

My first ever handbag was a navy blue multicoloured polka dot backpack when I was about four years old. Back then, I stuffed it with Polly Pockets and Barbies and just about anything else so that it would look like I had a lot to carry around like the women I looked up to (I specifically remember my aunt telling me "Even if you don't think you need something, you might...So just throw it in there!"). While my handbag has definitely changed (though the polka dot backpack still hangs in my closet), I continue to stuff my current carryall with just about whatever will fit into it. As I tend to wonder what other fashion girlies lug around in their own handbags, here is a look into my own. 

In my handbag*: Coach change purse, Coach wallet, Blackberry, MAC creme blush, Trident Layers gum, Lancome Juicy Tube, vitamins, MAC lipgloss, day planner, sunglasses, Nudge, a pen, notebooks and an umbrella. My handbag is a metallic Nine West. 


*I also often carry one or two magazines, a makeup bag and toothbrush with me however opted out of adding them to the photo because...well...they wouldn't fit.

365 Days of Summer

While summer will soon be morphing into the cool months of autumn and we have cardigans, thigh high tights, leather booties and oversized school/work bags to look forward to, let's stop and take a moment to wonder what it would be like if it were summer all year round. If there were no falling leaves, no crisp breezes, no first snow fall. What would this far away land look like? I have my fingers crossed it would look like this fashion spread in Elle Greece. 

And I wish this for three reasons dear fashion girlies. 

Reason 1: Who wouldn't want to walk out their door to a place as pituresque as the grape fields and flower gardens featured in Elle Greece? 

 

Reason 2: We (meaning us fashion girls) would have an unlimited wardrobe of drapy floral dresses, bell skirts, silk scarves and 50's inspired shift dresses (this is a fact, not a fantasy). 

Reason 3: The men would all look like this (this too is a fact, not a fantasy. I promise).

Felicity's Book Shelf - Influenced

There are obvious downsides to finding yourself (wide)awake at 2:30 AM. Coming to the realization sleep was no longer an option, I reached for Influence (2008, Penguin Group); a book, while on my bookshelf for over a year, I have never gotten around to fully reading.

Upon reading the Infuence's introduction, written by Ashley Olsen, one part in particular stood out: "Whether it's my family, my friends, a novel I have read a hundred times over or my favourite painting, I'm really just a sum of many different parts."

Ultimately, for myself anyhow, this statement defines what it means to be influenced. Influence isn't something that changes or makes you into something you were never meant to be. Rather, to be influenced or inspired is to accept and embrace the defining people, moments, events, songs, artwork, places in your lifetime and allowing them help shape you into the greatest possible you.

The Bigger, The Better

The first pair of sunglasses I ever splurged on were a pair of Guess acetate frames in tortoise shell with brown lenses. I was 13 and, at the time, it not only was the most money I had ever spent on one item but a fashion forward item no less (the lenses were oversized). I wore my beloved sunglasses everywhere and from here was born my fetish of sunglasses (and I mean "fetish" in a non creepy way). 

Over the years, designers have continued to increase the size of their frames. So much so, that any lens smaller than a fists size seems somewhat inadequate. And I couldn't be happier. Yes, sunglasses protect your eyes from the suns harmful UV Rays (always be certain before purchasing that you are getting UV protection!) however, there are other benefits of sunglasses as well. For example...

1. Want to make your favourite dress from last season current? Sunglasses.

2. Don't want to wear makeup for your morning coffee date? Sunglasses.

3. Didn't get your 7-8 hours of beauty sleep last night? Sunglasses.

4. Want to check out that cute guy walking past you without your boyfriend noticing? Sunglasses. (*Disclaimer*: make sure you have dark lenses!) 

While choosing a pair of sunglasses is about as easy as finding a pair of jeans that make your butt look great, take a look at these, these, and these if not to purchase, at the very least to swoon over.


In conclusion, fashion girlies, when it comes to sunglasses, the bigger, the better....in my eyes anyhow.

Fantasy Fashion League

Whenever I hear men talk about their fantasy sports leagues I can't help but laugh. They transform into the little boys they once were who believed they could fly like Superman and dunk like Jordan if they practiced enough. While flipping through my July issue of W Magazine, I came across this spread and the concept of fantasy leagues started to hold some clarity. What I mean is that if I were to create my own Fantasy Fashion League, these ensembles would without a doubt make the cut. I want to live in a world where I can dress like this everyday. Until then, fashion girlies, I am just fine with fantasizing (even if I hear a few laughs of my own).

I'm Attracted To Good Jeans

This past Monday, I posted my top tips for choosing great denim. I decided to take a few snapshots of my latest favourite pair. 

Fit: Skinny with a medium rise. Wash: Indigo with whiskering. 

H&M top, Dish Jeans, Enzo Angiolini Booties. 

This distressed skinny jean works because of its close fit to the body. As I have a smaller frame, my body can easily be overwhelmed by too much fabric doing me no favours. 

The distressed effect makes the jean a little more casual not to mention visual appeal.

The pockets are well centered and slightly oversized.

Do You Have Good Jeans?

There is no other fashion item quite as priceless as a pair of unreal fitting jeans. Key word - FITTING. Not too many things make this fashion blogger cringe as much as a too small, poorly cut, badly washed pair of denim (other things that make me cringe: boys with dirty fingernails, toes hanging over the edge of open toe shoes and the word "panties").

Here are my tips on finding great fitting denim!

1. Ignore the Numbers : While size is your starting point, every brand is sized differently (exhausting I know!). So while you may be a 26 in one brand (or even style) in another you may be a 30. Instead focus on how the denim makes your body look, how they make you feel.


2. It's All In the Fit : Just because ultra high-waisted denim or jean leggings are a hot trend does not mean they will look hot on your body. When it comes to denim, finding a great pair is less about what is trendy and more what accentuates your best curves. Try on different cuts - straight legged, skinny, trouser, bootcut - to see what looks best on your frame. Aim for the waist to sit comfortably beneath your natural waistline, skim your thighs and make your butt look...well...hot! 


3. Hands In Your Pockets : You want to pay attention to both pocket size and placement. Too far apart or too large will make your backside look larger than wanted, too high a pocket will shorten your waist and lengthen your bottom, too low pockets will just flat out make your behind look awkward. Great pockets are not slightly oversized and centered.


4. Wash : The wash you choose has a great impact on how your body appears. The "it" denim wash is always changing, however the most classic, and universally flattering, is the dark wash. Dark wash denim looks great on all body types and can be taken from a day to night look effortlessly by simply changing ones accessories. Whichever wash you choose, be certain that it highlights your best attributes rather than accentuating any unwanted "flaws".


5. Be Patient : Finding great denim is not easy. It can be frustrating and an all day event - so make it just that. Rather than dreading finding your newest pair of jeans, set out with one of your closest and trusted fashion girlies and make the search something to look forward!

Let's Get Juicy

I still remember getting my first Lancome Juicy Tube. My best friend, Tammy, bought it for me (in a sort of glittering pearly white hue) for my birthday. Growing up, Tammy was the cool one. She wore Guess while I wore the Gap, she used butterfly clips in her hair while I was still using barrettes and glided the super-chic Lancome Juicy Tube gloss over her lips while I was still using my cherry flavoured Lip Smackers. Needless to say, when I opened my first Juicy Tube, I loved it (so much so that I applied it religiously. Every 10 on the 10. So. Much. Glitter.) 


Fast forward to present day fashion girl and I again feel as if I have won the lottery as I am currently (and obsessively) reapplying my newest Juicy Tube in Cherry Burst. Totally in love (yes. with a lip gloss.). If you don't have a Lancome Juicy Tube of your own, I highly suggest you run out and grab yourself one (or two or three). Yes this gloss holds sentimental significance to this fashion blogger, but the product speaks for itself as it has just the right amount of pigment and lacks any stickiness that so many glosses seem to have.

Oh, Canada!

Growing up, I always looked forward to Canada's Day. Not because I am overly patriotic (though I do love Canada) or love to wear red and white, but because a) I can't say no to a bbq and b) I am attracted to glittery things such as sparklers and fireworks (followed by sequins, metallic flats and birthday candles). Looking back I can vividly remember sitting in my best friends backyard with Strawberry Kiwi KoolAid, huge slices of watermelon, homemade burgers and when the sun finally set we whipped out the massive sparklers our parents bought us (after some mild begging) and wrote our names in the air.

Even though I am now technically an adult, I still cannot pass up any of these memories I hold so closely to my heart. So laugh at your bbq's, drink your KoolAid, enjoy the fireworks and light as many sparklers as you can!
